Year 1 have travelled back in time this week to visit the ‘Victorian era’! As part of our Toy Story topic we have been learning about the life of a Victorian child. Year 1 were very eager to learn about the differences in their school day so we transformed our classrooms into a Victorian schoolroom! We looked at Victorian class rules and were horrified to learn that they would have been in trouble for having dirty hands, writing with their left hand and wearing scruffy uniform. Year 1 then had the chance to sit in rows and recite spellings and numbers whilst the teachers transformed themselves into strict Victorian school teachers. Some children were even brave enough to wear the ‘Dunce’s’ hat!
In addition, we have been investigating waterproof materials in Science. The children worked collaboratively to carry out an investigation to find out which material would be most suitable to make an umbrella for a teddy bear! We have been using dienes blocks in Maths to support learning about place value and in English we have been writing our own version of the story Dogger. It has been another busy week in Year 1 and we are all ready for a rest over half term!
