Senior Preparatory The Whole Character

In the Senior Preparatory part of Terra Nova School, in addition to the Curriculum, the holistic focus is very much on developing the child’s whole character. By the time our pupils leave the school at 13, they are confident, articulate, mature young people equipped with the necessary tools to enable them to make the very best of the opportunities their senior school will present.

Team building and leadership activities
The opportunities, such as achieving “The Griffin Award”, for pupils to develop their team building and leadership skills at Terra Nova is integral to what the school offers the pupils who stay on for Year 7&8. For want of a better description, the children are the best of the school. Pupils have developed into young people. They know where their individual talents lie and are confident to tackle things they find challenging. They are the school’s end product and as such are role models for the younger children to aspire to become.
The Character
Members of the Terra Nova teaching staff assess our pupils’ behaviour. Specifically they look at how a pupil is performing in being:

  • Reflective or Responsible
  • Resilient in persevering
  • Collaborative in working with their peers

Pastoral contributions eg how engaged, enthusiastic and how much pupils contribute to school life

House system contributions eg how much pupils contribute to the house system

School Clubs
For the Senior Prep School children there are a number of clubs (some free and some paid for) that run during break times in the school day and  from 5pm – 6pm. There are delivered by the teachers. Just a few examples of these clubs are: Chamber Choir, DT Club, Chess Club, Fencing, Shooting, Golf, Cooking etc. Also available are subject scholarship preparation clubs.
Holiday Clubs
Holiday clubs take place on an ad hoc basis. The clubs are organised and run by the teachers and on occasion external companies and cover a broad range of activities and sports. Clubs vary in duration, some run for a week, others can run for up to two weeks. Examples of clubs are as follows: Archaeology Club, Tennis Club, Cricket Club, Scholarship Art Club, Rugby Easter camp etc.
The Academic
The joy of learning and the immeasurable opportunities this presents is constantly emphasised to the children. The small class sizes and the individual focus ensures that all children fulfill their academic potential.
The Individual
Each child is known by their teachers, their individual talents and strengths are celebrated and their weaknesses are supported.
The Leader
Teaching leadership and entrepreneurial skills is integral to the Terra Nova way of life. Pupils develop self motivation, communication and decision making skills.

In Year 7&8 pupils complete the Griffin Award, designed to help them learn to lead, recognise their strengths and weaknesses, organise themselves and others and contribute to the wider school community.

The Risk taker
Our children are able to challenge and push boundaries in a safe environment, which supports the school’s wish for its pupils to excel and grow in confidence. Having the confidence to take risks and learn from mistakes are key life skills. At Terra Nova we truly believe that FAIL is the First Attempt In Learning!
