We are extremely proud of all of the children in Year 1 for their wonderful performances in our class assembly, in particular the spectacular way in which they rehearsed and performed their very own version of Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Gruffalo’. We chose The Gruffalo as a focus for our topic work as it was a great link to ‘The Enchanted Forest.’ The Gruffalo is a well known story which all the children take great pleasure in reading so this made all the work linked to it even more exciting and relevant. Through the story we were able to cover a variety of different writing styles in our English lessons. We studied the rhyming couplets as an introduction to poetry and went on to write our own minibeast poems. We also wrote letters to Julia Donaldson which enabled the children to study letter writing techniques. We have extended the children’s use of adjectives through detailed descriptions of ‘The Gruffalo’ and challenged them to create mini forests in jam jars where the characters could live. This delightful story has inspired some fantastic work this term and we have a number of budding authors in Year 1!
